Onboarding: It’s Not Just A Buzzword

One of the most exciting steps for any employer in their business is hiring new people. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with the people there, but hiring means expansion, and that’s where the fresh ideas and the fresh thinking comes into it. Hiring new people is going to change the way that your business runs, and it’s going to be something that you benefit from later on, too.

As people come into your business, they’re going to need your help to get their bearings. This is like a honeymoon period known as onboarding – you bring them ‘onboard’ on your business. This includes things like team building ideas, spending time getting to know them and teaching them your specific workplace systems. As they get more comfortable, the onboarding process changes to something more long term. You want to reduce employee turnover, which is why you need these tips to help with your employee onboarding program.

  1. Make your company culture a part of it. You want people to integrate into your business and your existing team. That means that your onboarding processes should include bringing the culture you have into it while you do it. You can ensure they learn your mission statement, your values, your fun days and your rewards. This will help them to feel settled and happy.
  2. It’s not a day thing. If you want your onboarding processes to go well, you need to remember that it’s not just a day. It’s a process and it means it’s going to take a few months to really settle in. Make sure that you have regular check-ins for at least the full trial period; this will really make a difference to the way that you bring someone on. The first three months should be packed with mentors and orientation.
  3. Start before they start. Really, before your employee is actually physically in the office, paperwork and orientation can begin. Send a care package to welcome them to the business, and make sure that they are aware of who to ask for help. Give them the codes they need, their new building pass and get them to know what equipment they’ll need. They need to feel thoroughly looked after!
  4. Make them feel comfortable. The hardest part of starting a new job is the way people feel welcome when they get there. Make your new staff feel happy and comfortable when they start working with you. This will ensure that they are happy to be in your office, your business and more. Ask what will make them feel welcomed and happy because this alone will ensure that they have a good start in your business.

Creating a strong onboarding program takes some time and work on your part. If you want the best, you have to offer them the best. That means taking your time to get your onboarding right. You’ll save so much time and energy down the road if you want to make sure that your new hire feels good!
