How Well Do You Know Your Employees?

It’s a popular decision for businesses to create a team page on their website where they can introduce their employees. Some of them even add friendly team mug shots. You’ve all stumbled upon such a page. From corporate displays to a more casual tone, the team page is designed to make your business appear more accessible and human. By putting a face and a name to some of your main business functions, you help your customers to establish a connection with your brand.

This is John, our digital marketing guru. He loves cats and apple pies.

Say hi to Mary, our IT admin who is also a knitting enthusiast during her spare time.

Jane Smith, our manager, went to Harvard where she studied business management.

The team page is a source of information about your employees. But behind the smiling face, do you really know who they are? The chances are that, as many business owners, you need to find out more about your employees. They are, after all, your most valuable asset.

What’s behind the smile of your employees?

Reading their resumes isn’t enough

Every respectable business owner has dedicated some time during the interview process to go through the resumes of the most suitable candidates and, hopefully, commit to memory some of the most interesting professional facts. Did you know that Jane went to Harvard? That’s something amazing your company can shout about. Except for one detail: How can you be sure that Jane really was a Harvard student if you don’t use a background check website? You’d be surprised to know that many candidates are not afraid of lying on their resume. While a white lie won’t make any difference, claiming certifications one doesn’t have can affect not only their performance but also your business.

Do you know how they feel about the company?

You may not be able to read minds, but you need to learn how to catch glimpses of how your team feels about the business. The most difficult thing you’ll have to do, as an employer, is to see your best talents leave. Retaining your employees is not only hard work, but it also requires a lot of psychology. Indeed, you need to put yourself in their shoes to identify potential issues. For instance, keeping your team motivated is vital to your business. Indeed, make a point of rewarding good work. Employees who don’t feel appreciated are the first to quit.

Are your perks suitable?

Creating a quirky work environment has become a priority in the business world. However, don’t make it your goal to build an instagramable office. In truth, nobody cares about your fancy hammocks and wacky design. What employees expect from you is to define meaningful perks that suit their needs. Free coffee and a fridge filled with refreshing drinks can boost their mood. Motivational quotes on the walls might sound appealing to your social media followers, but they only succeed in irritating your employees. Consider also health and family-focused perks that can make a difference to your team’s life.

There is no denying that your employees are your best assets. However, getting to know your assets and to understand who they are and what they need is the only way you can build a reliable and powerful team of talents. Ultimately, you need to keep your best assets close to your heart.
