Moving out of your home can be a little stressful whether you’ve done it plenty of times before or perhaps it might be your very first time. Here are some things to do before moving out of your home that you can put on your checklist.
Have A Declutter
Decluttering your home can be very therapeutic, and it’s definitely something to do before you move out and into your new home. The last thing you want is to bring any unnecessary clutter that’s just going to end up taking up space and remaining un-used and not wanted. So go room by room and clear out as much rubbish as you can find. When chucking out your rubbish, make sure you’re hiring a skip from an environmentally responsible provider. Section it off, so you have one bag for the bin, one for donating and one for selling. You could actually make a tidy sum from selling your old stuff online.
Divert Your Mail
It’s a thing we can tend to forget, but it’s important to make sure that all your mail is diverted to your new property. That also being said, you should let all the relevant companies like your bank and any subscription services or stores you use regularly online that you’re moving. Diverting your mail is pretty easy, but it might cost you a fee by your postal provider. You should keep diverting your mail for the next few months, just so there’s nothing that lands on your old doorstep that could have been important.
Take Final Meter Readings
Whether you’re switching utility companies or keeping the same one, you always need to provide them with a final meter reading on your gas and electric supplies in order for them to send you a final bill of what needs to be charged. So one for the check-list is to take any recordings that are required the day you move out of your property. Take a picture of the relevant dial or box which displays the meter and make sure the photo is time stamped. This will avoid the energy companies from charging you any extra money in the cross-over between you and the new tenants/owners moving in.
Organise A Moving Van
A moving van is something you should get organised sooner rather than later because you want to ensure you’ve shopped around and got quotes from several companies so that you can get the best deal and hopefully play them off against each other to get a better quote. Look at the reputation of the removal company as you want them to highly professional. After all, they’re dealing with all your valuables, so you want to make sure they get there in one piece. It might also be worth making sure you have all the insurance in place just in case anything does go wrong.
Moving out of your home can be a blur, but as long as you have done all of the above, the move will be a lot more seamless and stress-free…well almost.
