A lot of things can go right in business, but a lot more can go wrong – and some of the things that can go wrong are so very easy to avoid. So easy to avoid that if you encounter them, you’ll absolutely be banging your head off the desk when you realize that a bit of forethought could have helped you avoid the issue!
Firstly, consider insurance. Businesses need insurance to ensure that their interests are protected. Now, nobody is saying that your business premises is going to burn down tonight, or that your delivery fleet will be stolen a week from now – but these worst case scenarios can, and do happen. They are not avoidable, but you can plan for them. You can certainly avoid being caught out by them by having the right insurance in place for your business. If you’re operating a fleet of vehicles, find a cheap van insurance broker, if you run a bakery, get the place covered. It’s all very simple and the fees might be high right now, but they will be higher when a disaster occurs.
Next, consider money. Money is not something that you can take for granted in business. Money is not finite and if you are all about spending, you’ll have to make sure you can cover your spending. If you don’t do this, your business is going to suffer when it makes losses. Produce a budget and make sure you make ends meet. Making losses is common, but leading yourself to bad business finances is definitely avoidable.
What about the people in your business? Yes, you have actual people working for you with thoughts and feelings. Nobody likes going to work, well – almost nobody. Even then, you can still ensure everyone in your business is unproductive if you are operating a toxic work environment. While you might not be breaking the law, you owe it to yourself to ensure your staff enjoys their work, so that they are productive. Don’t ignore or neglect your staff.
Finally, there is the law. Breaking the law can result in fiscal punishments or more serious prosecution. Make sure you do everything by the book – and if you are unsure, consult legal aid. Being unsure is not an argument that will hold up in court. Treat your business with a bit of respect and avoid these pitfalls of business.
