How to Delegate to Achieve Your Business Goals

Learn how to delegate to achieve your business goals. As you move from solo business to manager of several staff members, it can be difficult to work out what you should be delegating and which tasks you need to do yourself. The challenge comes with learning to trust people to do a job that you worry you could do better.

Delegating properly is a fine art. As your to-do list expands and your days get longer and longer, delegating properly is essential for your business to run smoothly.

Here are some tips to help you delegate to achieve your business goals.

How to Delegate Tasks to Fulfil Your Business Goals

Outsource

Outsourcing is definitely one of the first things you should consider when you are starting to stress out about your to-do list. Whether you go for a specialist agency like a PPC agency or you find a freelancer to cover a specific job, outsourcing is the ideal way to get things off your list almost straight away.

As more and more businesses become increasingly specialised, outsourcing is becoming more popular. In fact, most businesses now operate within a net of contacts. For example, you might be offering legal services but your business will likely need a marketing team, a PR team, a website manager, HR and accountancy.

Train Your Staff

Of course, you should also be delegating tasks on a day to day basis and that is why you have a team in the office. If you want to fulfil your daily goals, you need to learn how to cut the chaff from your list and hand it down to other team members. And if this means offering the suitable training, then that’s what you should do.

The key to cutting and delegating tasks is working out what you don’t need to do and what falls into the remit of someone else’s job description. Staff training can be quite expensive but giving someone the chance to learn is often the best way to ensure that they do things your way! Plus, if your staff can train each other, your business as a whole will improve.

Trust

When you are used to working alone, trusting other people to do tasks is hard. It takes a certain level of perfectionism to reach success as an entrepreneur but once you are there, you need to learn to let go – at least enough to let someone else have a go!

One of the biggest mistakes those new to leadership make is micromanaging their team because they worry that they won’t be able to do the jobs they are given properly. Unfortunately, though you might think that micromanaging is getting the job done well, your team are feeling distrusted and pressured.

To stop micromanaging, you need to quite literally remove yourself from the situation. Leave your staff to work out how to perform a task on their own terms and focus more on creating a suitable work culture and managing expectations. Your team are perfectly capable – that’s why you hired them!

Learning to delegate takes time but as you begin to trust more and become a better manager, your goals will be accomplished with half the stress and in half the time!
