Are you very organized or a good people person? Use those things to your strength and get the job done.

Build Strong Relationships With Your Team

 

While your team needs to know that you are in charge, you need to think about creating a good relationship with your team members. Having them fear you, or worse, hate you, is not going to get the best out of them. So you need to create a space where they can talk to you openly, you are approachable, and you do extra things for them. Things like tea away days can be a good team building and bonding opportunity. So look out to arrange something like corporate paintballing or a night out for them. It helps to show that you’re not just the person in the office, but a real person that they can talk to.

 

Be Honest

 

Having transparency in the workplace is really key to getting things done well. Employees appreciate honesty and knowing where they stand with things. So be honest and truthful, especially about what is expected of them. Of course, some tact might be needed from time to time. However, your team will appreciate being talked to honestly and are likely to work harder when they know what is expected of them and the impact that their work has on the business.

 

Show Appreciation

 

Just as you will be quick to reprimand them when something goes wrong, you should be just as quick to show praise or appreciation when they have done something well. Letting them know when they have done well will mean they will want to do well in the future. It could be that you have something like employee of the month or just celebration of their birthdays in the office. Decide on something that will work for you in your workplace, as everywhere is different. It will make a big difference to the team’s morale, for sure.
