As all business owners know, having a healthy relationship with your employees is vital to the success of your business. Healthy relationships lead to happier employees and employers. So what can you as an employer do to maintain a healthy working relationship between yourself and your employees?
Follow the law
This might go without saying, but following the law and making sure you do everything by the book is an absolute must. While not always convenient, laws exist for a reason and are there to protect both parties.
Ensure that you are aware of laws concerning minimum wage, overtime pay and all types of leave. Having knowledge about the UK payroll may also greatly help your cause.
Communication is key
As with all good relationships, it is important to ensure that everyone in the relationship knows what is expected of them. This means having a contract that details the employee’s as well as your responsibilities, as well as clearly communicating any deadlines for work they need to complete.
Be sure to inform your employee if their work isn’t up to standard, otherwise they’ll have no reason to improve it.
Loyalty
Having loyal employees leads to a lower employee turnover, which in turn leads to a more stable work environment. One way of establishing loyalty is to first establish trust between you and your employee.
Make employees feel valued
Make employees feel valued Employees are much more likely to perform well if they feel valued. Making an employee feel valued is more than just an occasional pat on the head.
Employees want to know that the company appreciates them and that they are important. The most obvious way to do this is via pay.
Consider higher incentives and bonuses for employees who really go above and beyond. Make sure that you are being fair when it comes to pay and general treatment of employees, so that no one can accuse you of favouritism.
Another way of making employees feel treasured is by praising them. Ensure that their efforts don’t go unnoticed. Make an effort to include your employees when it comes to the business, even if it’s only regarding small decisions. Ask for opinions, and invite them to share their ideas with you – you never know what brilliant concepts they might come up with.
Find a balance
As much as you want your relationship with your employees to be good, you do need to know where to draw the line. Boundaries are there to protect both parties. You need to know when to be understanding and when to be firm.
It’s important to know when you need to discipline your employees, but it’s just as important to have fun now and then as well. Something as small as a monthly pizza party may greatly improve the work environment.
Your employees are there for a reason, and without them, you’d probably struggle immensely. So make sure to treat them with kindness, to help them when they need it, and to be someone they can come to in confidence when they are struggling with something.
