Motivation in business, especially when business is slow

It can be really hard to stay motivated when business is slow or you’re not progressing as quickly as you want with a goal.  In today’s post, I’m sharing 3 tips to help you stay motivated and stay on track.

Plus I’ll be sharing a super quick and easy EFT script with you.

Let’s jump into the 3 motivation tips to stay motivated.  I’ve also added 1 thing you must never do and 3 bonus exercises.

1.Focus on the big picture

When we lose motivation in business, we tend to get stuck in what’s going on right now.  Whilst I’m a huge fan of living in the present.  In this case, it can keep you feeling stuck.

Look at the whole journey of success.  What have you achieved so far? And be realistic.  Sometimes when I’ve asked coaching clients this question, they’ve said things like “Nothing” or “Not very much”  With a little pushing and a little thought, they were always able to come up with a list of achievements.  And I’m sure you will be able to come up with plenty too.

And also look at where you’re heading.

A great little exercise is to draw a success journey path and mark where you are on the path right now.  Again this will show you how much you’ve already achieved.  Then add in ideas that will help you to move forward on the path.

Success exercise - How to stay motivated when business is slow. Focus on the big Picture

Keep a record of this and you’ll be able to see your progress over the months and years. Any sort of tracking like this is a big motivator.  For example, when I stopped coaching sessions to focus on my blog (blogs) and creating downloads, one of the things I started to do was a monthly Blog Income Record.  I love seeing blog posts that other people share with their blog income results, so this was something I knew would keep me motivated.  Whilst I choose not to share these publicly, they are incredibly powerful for me.

I include all of the following…

  • All Income – I break this down into categories such as affiliate income, sponsored posts, download sales, AD income, Course sales
  • All expenses – Again I break my expenses down so that I know where my money is going, such as advertising, Tailwind Scheduling, Equipment, software…
  • Total profit
  • Facebook Stats
  • Pinterest Stats
  • Blog Stats
  • What I’ve achieved
  • What my goals are for the following month
  • What I struggled with and what I am going to do to overcome this
  • Other notes about how the month went in general

2. Do A PRIORITY Goal Task First

If you focus on a priority goal task first then every day you will have achieved something important that will move you closer to your ideal business.

Take your big – Ideal Business Goals and break them down to get your yearly goals, monthly goals, weekly goals and daily goals.

So let’s say you have a big goal to write a business book with an expected word count of 50,000.  The book is made up of 10 different sections.

Your yearly goal could be to complete and publish the book.

You’d have varying stage such as planning, plot outline…

Let’s say you’ve already done those things and you’re at the writing stage 7 months in with and you’ve completed 8 of the 10 sections.

Your monthly goal could be to complete the 9th section, you’re weekly goal could be to write 1000 words writing 5 days a week.  So your daily goal is to write 200 words or more.

When you break your goals down in this way, you will always have a clear daily goal to jump into as early in the day as possible.

Now, if this ends up being the only thing you do today, you’ll have still done something important that has moved you closer to achieving your BIG PICTURE GOAL.

Being able to end every single business day knowing you’ve achieved something rather than just being busy is super motivating.

Brian Tracy recommends writing your big priority goals down every day.  I personally recommend working on no more than 3 priority goals alongside each other so that you are able to really give each goal focus and time.

3. Keep A Success Journal

Make it a daily habit to write in your success journal.  Every day write down some key successes however big or small.  By doing this exercise every day, you train your mind to be successful.  Your subconscious mind will support you in having successes to write about every day and the law of attraction will draw successes to you.

People often underestimate simple exercises like this but this is one of the most powerful mindset habits you can create for yourself.

Give it a go and stick with it for at least 3 months.

As you build up your successes in your journal, this will really help to keep you motivated.  You’ll be able to look back and see all of the things you’ve achieved. I really wish I’d kept my early success journal to show you.  Some days it had things like I have 5 people on my email list now or someone contacted me about coaching today.  I’d write that in even if they didn’t actually book coaching.  It was a success because I was attracting interest in my coaching business.  Nowadays I tend to focus more on milestone successes such as creating new downloads or breaking through a page view target I’ve been working on, a milestone on my mailing list or a financial milestone. But in the early days, ALL successes went in that journal.  It’s powerful.

1 BIG Thing NOT To Do EVER In Business

Never, ever compare yourself to other people in business.  Aspire to achieve the success of others, definitely but don’t compare yourself or your business to others.  Compare yourself and your business with your own yesterdays.  In other words, aim to be bettering yourself and your business constantly.

For example, one of the things I really like to do is compare my business figures (stats and income) to this time last year.  That really helps to motivate me and even if I’m not exactly where I want to be with something, I can easily see the progress I’m making year on year.

Bonus 1 – EFT Motivation Booster

The best way to do this EFT Motivation Booster is to get up and move around while tapping on the meridian points.

At every point simply say MORE MOTIVATION

Your Tapping points are…

  • Top of the head
  • Start of the eyebrow (Thickest point)
  • Side of the eye

  • Collar bone
  • Under the arm

I love these MORE… EFT sessions.  They’re super powerful.  You don’t need to remember complicated phrases.  Just think about what you want more of.  In this case, that’s MORE MOTIVATION.  But you can say…

  • More Clarity
  • More Financial Abundance
  • More Success
  • More Romance
  • More Confidence…

The possibilities go on and on.

People often tell me they feel great after doing this kind of EFT but that they don’t have time to do it regularly.  What I’d like you all to know is that EFT time is ALWAYS time very well spent.  I get it, I really do.  I don’t do EFT every day.  What I do know is this. When I do take the time to do some EFT, my day goes better.  I feel better.  If you were to start every day with 5-10 minutes of EFT just to help you feel fantastic imagine the possibilities.  Imagine the energy you’ll put into your business day and the energy others will feel from you.

It’s powerful stuff and I encourage you to make it a part of your daily routine.

Affirmations have been a huge part of my life and business for many years.  I use them to help keep my thoughts positive and focused on what I want.

Bonus 3 – Visualize your ideal business

Visualizing your ideal business is incredibly powerful.  Try imagining your perfect business day or making a perfect sale.  Get nice and relaxed and enjoy this time.  If you’re new to visualizing, it may feel a little strange or that you’re not doing it right but stick with it.

You can also try Hypnosis downloads which I personally love to listen to at the end of the day as I’m falling off to sleep.  This really helps me fill my subconscious mind with what I want.

You can also type in Guided Meditation for Success into YouTube.  There are loads to choose from.
