Who are you talking to about your business?

Today I want to talk about who you are talking to about your business?  I think we all need people to bounce ideas off and ask for a second opinion.

It’s important to understand that your friends and family may not be the best people to talk with about your business.  Hopefully, they will support you, but they may not actually understand what it is you do or you’re trying to achieve.

My own family are incredibly supportive, but to be honest I don’t think any of them could actually tell anyone else what I do. Only one of my immediate family members has had their own business, although my mum did help my dad with his business when he was alive.

Also, they are NOT my ideal clients.  And I think that’s really important to understand.

I take advice and run ideas by people who are achieving the things that they want to achieve and have a similar idea of success.

Not all successful people will give you the advice that is best for you

I think this is such an important point and one that I talk about quite a lot with my coaching clients.  I can clearly remember as a newly qualified coach, being told by a successful coach, that I must make sacrifices now to achieve success in my business.  She was basically telling me, I must not think about time with my family as important, I should just focus on my business and then when it was successful, I would have time with my family.

NOPE, that was never, ever going to be my idea of success and yes I do admit that if I’d have taken that route, I’d have made a lot more money in my business and a lot quicker.  It would not have been my idea of success though.

Take advice from people who are achieving what you want

Take advice from people who are achieving what you want

The best people to seek advice from are the people who are already achieving what you want.  A single high power business owner of a multi-million-pound business working 60+ hours a week would probably not be the best person to speak to if you are a single mum with a passion to work from home and build your business to work around your family.

Is a coach the person you should be talking to about your business?

As a coach, you may expect that I am going to recommend hiring a coach to talk to about your business.  I do recommend this but with caution.  If you don’t have a support system in place with people who can give you good advice or if you need someone to push you and help you be your best, this is a perfect idea.

But you need to choose your coach with caution.  I know that I’m not the right coach for everyone.  If you want coaching to set up businesses all across the world and you want advice on how to actually do that.  I’m not your coach.

I’m your coach, if you are struggling to get things done, and don’t really believe in yourself.  I’m your coach if you want to learn how to apply the law of attraction in your business.  I’m your coach if you want someone to bounce ideas off.

Take the time to get to know your coaches values and ideas.  So to get to know me, you can read my blog.  Leave me a comment and see what my reaction is.  Is this a match for you?

UPDATE: Please note that I no longer offer private coaching. Though you are more than welcome to reach out via this blog for support.

Could a mastermind group work for you?

Many of my business friends are a part of mastermind groups.  I personally have never been a part of a mastermind group because know I work best on a one to one basis.  I think this is definitely a great idea and I know that many of my friends really feel motivated and get great advice from these kinds of groups.

This is an interesting post on How to find a mastermind group BySmart Passive Income.

Going back to friends and family

I’ll finish off with a point about your friends and family.  I speak to a lot of business owners who get frustrated that they don’t feel their family understand their goals and dreams for their business.

I’ve certainly felt this at times too.  But here’s the thing.  They don’t need to understand.  Maybe you don’t understand your friend who works a 40 hour week in a job she hates but would never consider leaving because what she does like is the security of knowing she has a certain pay cheque at the end of every week.

We are ALL different with different dreams.

Allow them to be who they are, you be who you are and find the right people who can support you.

My very best wishes to you in your business and life.

  1. Great post Wendy. I see a lot of value in having a coach but the right one is highly important. I’ve been involved in a few mastermind groups for a time and they served a purpose that I needed at the time.
I have family and friends very supportive and others who don’t have a clue nor want to. For some doing something besides a 40 hour work week for an employer is beyond what they grasp. Your right in sharing to respect others dreams and plans. In one of my businesses where others have the opportunity to start their own business it is very important to respect it’s not for everyone and stay on a positive level with them.
I watch a 2 year old temporarily and spend time with grandkids so I’d never do well with a 40-60 hour work week. I appreciate what your sharing and am constantly fine tuning how I do things. Freeing my time is very important to do other things I enjoy and spend time with my family.

  2. I lovelovelove that you point out that not every successful person has advice that’s right for YOU. We’re all so different, and each success story is different! Not everyone’s word is golden just because they consider themselves “a success.”
