I’ve definitely started using StumbleUpon to increase blog traffic. I’ve done a fair bit of research and testing to see what works. I’m by no means a StumbleUpon pro yet but I want to share with you what’s been working for me.
If you’re like I was just a few months ago, you probably don’t really get what StumbleUpon is and more importantly how you can use it to drive more traffic to your blog.
So I’ve put together this post to share with you a few things I’ve picked up about using StumbleUpon effectively.
So what is StumbleUpon?
It’s a social bookmarking site. Basically, when you stumble on something you like here on the web, you add it to your likes (you bookmark it as something interesting).
It’s also a community where you can see what other people find interesting. So let’s say you’re interested in homemaking, you can choose this category as one of your interests and search (stumble) relevant posts other people have liked in this category.
Okay, before you can start stumbling to your hearts content, you’ll need to sign up at STUMBLEUPON
Spend a bit of time getting to know the site. Add your profile and connect your social media accounts.
My top 3 tips for using StumbleUpon to increase blog traffic
1. Share your own blog posts as you create them.
I recommend that you add StumbleUpon to your social media sharing icons immediately and ensure that you share every new blog post you create.
2. Share other blog posts of interest more than your own
If you just add your own blog posts and never stumble anything from anyone else, you won’t get much out of StumbleUpon. I recommend that if you have a blog, you are actively getting involved with other bloggers on a regular basis. I’m talking daily as rather than once in a blue moon. I’d also recommend that share more from other people than you share your own content.
So let’s say you add a new blog post every Monday and Friday. I recommend that you add at least 1 Stumble (like) from someone else’s blog daily. I probably share an average of 10 posts a day, sometimes a little less other days more. I try to get on there most days though.
If I don’t spend time on StumbleUpon for a few days, I notice a drop.
3. Add the SumbleUpon toolbar for easy sharing
Yes, I love sharing other people’s blog posts and I know it’s beneficial for me to Stumble things of interest. So it’s super frustrating when I find a blog post I like and there’s no Stumble sharing icon. And it takes time to copy the link and then log int StumbleUpon, so often I don’t. Now I have installed the StumbleUpon toolbar, so any time this happens I just click it and it’s all done. Easy
You can find the toolbar extension on the StumbleUpon help page.
How to Stumble (like posts on Stumble)
Okay, I found this really confusing to start with so I’m going to quickly explain a few things.
When you’re actually on the StumbleUpon site and click the Stumble button, you are basically telling the site to find you another post of interest to look at. You’re not liking the post you’re on. This is where I was getting confused.
What you need to do if you like the post is click the thumbs up.
And if you’re not on the StumbleUpon site and you’ve found a blog post you like, look out for the StumbleUpon sharing icon. Depending on which device you’re reading this post on, you’ll find mine at the side or at the bottom.
And if you can’t find one, that’s when it comes in really handy to have the StumbleUpon toolbar extension already set up.
I hope you’ve found this post helpful. I’ve been seeing really good results from StumbleUpon, particularly on my other blog Ideal Weight Challenge
It’s definitely worth using for both blogs.
